Fantasy Baseball Spot Starter Pickups For Tuesday 5/10/11

Monday's Recommended Starter Stats - Travis Wood - 6.2 Innings Pitched - 6 Strikeouts - Win - 0.00 ERA - 1.05 WHIP
Cumulative Starters' Stats - 295 Innings Pitched - 233 Strikeouts - 7.11 K/9 - 18 Wins in 48 Starts - 3.63 ERA - 1.18 WHIP

I told you my gut said to start Wood over Santana.  Both have been unlucky to start the season, but Wood has been unlucky to an extreme and is really a better fantasy pitcher option than Santana anyways.  Starting off the week with six strikeouts and a clean ERA in a win is always good for your team.  For the deeper league players, it wasn't super pretty, but Jeff Karstens was definitely a decent starter given the dearth of option.  Tuesday's starter coming up...

Tuesday Standard League Recommendation - Kevin Correia - Pittsburgh Pirates vs Los Angeles Dodgers - 7:05 PM ET - 36.8% Owned in ESPN Leagues

Correia has been pitching above his talent level on the year and has been lucky to pick up the five wins he already has.  That said, he's going to continue to to do that Tuesday against the dodgers.  The Dodgers have gone 2-8 over the last ten games, and outside of Kemp and Ethier, their offense has been basically dead all year.  They scored two runs or less in seven of those eight losses, and just three in the other loss.  The Pirates on the other hand, are 7-3 over their last ten games and have been scoring runs in bunches.  Correia is due for a solid strikeout day to bring him in line with his career K/9 numbers, and that might be today.  Either way, you can bank on him for solid ERA and WHIP with a good shot at a win.

Alternate - Jason Hammel - Colorado Rockies vs New York Mets - 8:40 PM ET - 15.7% Owned in ESPN Leagues

Hammel has strung together three solid starts in a row after three decent starts to begin the year.  He's been pitching better than his FIP, but like with Correia, the opponent isn't going to rough him up.  The Mets have been slumping over the last week.  The worry is Coors Field, but he's pitched well enough at home to be a solid alternate if you can't get Correia.

Deep League Starter - Rick Porcello - Detroit at Minnesota - 8:10 PM ET - 3.5% Owned in ESPN Leagues

Porcello has strung together four good starts in a row, but I still don't trust the young pitcher enough to make him the mixed league recommendation.  However, with a spot here at Target Field and the Twins slumping lineup, I'd play him in any AL-Only league here today.  The only caveat is he's been striking out guys at a rate higher than expected so far this year, so thats the worry of a fall off here.
