Apologies for the lack of a recommendation on Wednesday and the shorted recommendation for Thursday.  I was still recovering from my overnight work and was exhausted but couldn't sleep.  I seem to have straightened myself out now, so hopefully I'll be able to work uninterrupted moving forwards.

Freddy Garcia delivered six innings of average ERA and WHIP ball on the way to picking up a win.  Nothing to write home about, but still a quality outing from a spot started pitcher.  Yankee starters are always good for wins, so keep an eye on Phil Hughes when he comes back to the rotation.  If he returns to form he'll be ownable in basically all leagues.

Onto Friday's pickups.  We've reached July and you would think that the good pitchers would all be owned by now and yet there are still quality options available to us every day that are owned in less than 50% of leagues...

Friday's Recommendation - Jason Vargas - Seattle Mariners vs San Diego Padres - 10:10 PM ET - 14.4% Owned in ESPN Leagues

Vargas is everything you could want from a spot start here on Friday.  Decent strikeout potential (Nearly 6 K/9)...Check.  Good matchup with a propensity for striking out (San Diego is 27th in runs scored with the most strikeouts in the league)...Check.  The ability to go deep into games (2 complete game shutouts already this year)...Check.  It's an easy obvious choice here today to take Vargas.  He's startable here in every league and definitely worth a extra start for your team if you are slightly behind late this week.

Friday's Alternate - Edwin Jackson - Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs - 2:20 PM ET - 15.4% Owned in ESPN Leagues

Jackson has been inconsistent all season long, but a matchup here with the Cubs is a pretty enticing second option here.  The strikeout numbers have been there all year and Jackson has been great when he has been on hit game.  I really like Jackson here against another NL team.  He was good against the Dodgers last month, was good through six innings at the Diamondbacks last week, and shutout the Nationals his last time out, striking out more than a better per inning on each occasion.  Great second option on Friday here and worth taking as a second spot start option here if you are chasing stats.

No deep league recommendation here on Friday.  The under 1.0% owned players are pretty ugly.  I do like a speculative pickup on Rich Harden, as he's probably owned in less leagues than he should be, just not worth starting against the Diamondbacks offense plus a DH here.
